...Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List and Apocalypse Now, were not just cinematic experiences but were informative in terms of creating a sense of what those wars were like. They served that function in the culture. I was aiming for something along those lines with The Hurt Locker - to make a movie that hopefully, 20 years later, somebody would watch and say, Oh, I didn't know the war was like that...
