...with only seconds to spare. Though his client may or may not have got away with murder, during the Simpson trial Cochran, repeatedly and effectively, managed to get away with rhetorical arson. He ignited a battle with prosecutor Christopher Darden over the word "nigger." He dragged the ghost of Malcolm X into the courtroom by dubbing Fuhrman and detective Philip Vannatter "twin devils." By the end of the trial he had taken to showing up flanked by Nation of Islam bodyguards. And, to the horror even of some members of the defense team, he made the odious and hyperbolic comparison...

According to police, Burden and James died because three soldiers stationed at Fort Bragg, the huge Army base adjacent to Fayetteville, decided it was a good night to commit a hate crime. Private Malcolm Wright, 21, Private Burmeister, 20, and Specialist Meadows, 21, had been drinking and nightclubbing when they allegedly drove to Campbell Terrace to harass blacks. Some theft is part of a wholesale pattern. At the Y&A Group, a defunct St. Louis, Missouri, engineering firm, former president Malcolm Cheek stole $600,000 through schemes like pledging company assets as collateral for loans that he pocketed. When he later ran into severe cash-flow problems, Cheek ransacked $254,000 from the 401(k) accounts in a last-ditch effort to cover his losses. Convicted last March, he is serving a nine-year prison term for fraud and embezzlement...
