...From Warsaw last week came reports that the 133-man Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party., meeting in Moscow in December, came within an ace of firing Khrushchev in favor of ex-Premier Georgy Malenkov, who seems to be huffing and puffing up the ladder since his demotion two years ago. The report has a plausible sound: a prearranged close testing of strength would be a finely calculated hint to the ebullient Nikita to mend his ways, but fast. It would explain the recent reversal of the Khrushchev line, the rewarming of Stalinist slogans for the benefit...

...Comrades. As for Hungary, the best way to make it appear that everything was under control in Budapest was for Khrushchev to make an on the spot visit. He did so in the company of Georgy Malenkov (Communists seem to travel in pairs these days, either to refute rumors of factionalism, or to make each other share the guilt). It was at the Supreme Soviet meeting two years ago that Malenkov confessed his errors and was downgraded from First Premier to Electric Power boss...

But by week's end the U.N. team had not seen Kadar. That privilege was reserved for the two visitors from Moscow, Khrushchev and Malenkov. In Budapest's Parliament House Khrushchev, in effect, told the Hungarians that they could not expect the same measure of independence as the Poles were now enjoying. Whereas stiff-backed Wladyslaw Gomulka had been able to stand off the bullying Russians, in Hungary the Russians were dealing, not with...

...economic exploitation strained the satellite regimes beyond endurance, and generated layers of explosive discontent beneath the placid surfaces, particularly in Poland and Hungary. The strain could not be kept up, either in Russia or the satellites. Out of that realization came Russia's new course, which began with Malenkov, and then (after a retreat) was continued by Khrushchev. Hoping to win popular allegiance, Khrushchev, as the head of a gang that rose to authority under Stalin, delivered his famous weeping recital of Stalinist terror. But the discussion of Communist evil was not so easily confined to Stalin alone...
