...best Gore film was barely seen at all. It was created by Spike Jonze, the 29-year-old director of Being John Malkovich, a surreal movie about people getting inside a celebrity's head. No wonder it's a Gore favorite. (Bush's most recent favorite is Forrest Gump.) After using a handheld camera to shoot the Gores at their Tennessee farm and a North Carolina beach house, Jonze came up with a deftly cut montage of Gore kicking back and having fun. He makes Tipper blush by showing off the nude self-portrait she painted when pregnant with Karenna...
...Proust in pictures. It roams through prewar drawing rooms, attending to whispers of malice and amour. A brilliant man (Marcello Mazzarella, as Marcel) talks to a ravishing woman (Emmanuelle Beart, as Gilberte) of an old wound. "Heartbreak can kill," he says, "but leaves no trace." The roue Charlus (John Malkovich) takes his sexual pleasures at the business end of a whip. These characters are often crushed by the burden of glamour, but the film isn't. It wears its gravity with a buoyant ease, seeing through walls, magically turning statues into people. It shows Marcel, as a child, watching himself...
Puppetry as subversive performance art may have seemed silly in Being John Malkovich, but with this new video, puppets may become the new cartoons. The Brit-Pop band had Jim Henson's Creature Shop build 15-ft., Sesame Street-colored bodies for the members to rest (and bounce) their tiny heads. Directed by Hammer and Tongs, the video is much more daring, and fun, than Sisqo's The Thong Song...

Deserving films like The Talented Mr. Ripley, Election, Toy Story 2 and Being John Malkovich get shut out by a cheesy Republican movie. Miramax preserves its streak. The story ends happily for the Weinsteins. Ah! But wait... It's more complicated. See, last year, the race boiled down to Saving Private Ryan vs. Shakespeare in Love. Saving Private Ryan was a Dreamworks movie, Shakespeare, of course, a Miramax one. Ryan was the heavily favored juggernaut-but the Weinsteins orchestrated such a monster PR campaign with literally...
