...real money will go to the giant construction and oil-service firms that will rebuild Kuwait's shattered petroleum industry. Bechtel Group, based in San Francisco, recently signed a $150 million letter of intent to manage the mammoth task, a job that analysts say could bring the company $6 billion in revenue over the next few years. Bechtel, which has operated in Kuwait for more than 40 years, is gearing up to hire 4,300 workers for the project. Other U.S. heavyweights likely to land big contracts include Fluor, based in California, a leader in petroleum projects, and Halliburton...

...They want to do more than tie yellow ribbons," he says. And Boston plans to satisfy that desire by promoting the Boston Harbor Fest for the Fourth of July. B.C.C.I.'s fondness for drug money brought the bank to grief in Florida and eventually led to recent mammoth losses. Undercover customs agents first stumbled onto B.C.C.I. money laundering during a sting operation. As part of the scheme, agents sent several million dollars of Medellin cartel drug funds through a B.C.C.I. bank in Miami. What happened next was worthy of Alice in Wonderland. Bank officers noticed the agents' amateurish attempt at money laundering and offered to teach them more sophisticated methods. Example: the bank would wire funds to B.C.C.I. branches around the world before handing the cash back to drug...

When Sears' 13 directors gathered last week in the spacious, peach-carpeted 68th-floor boardroom, the reports they faced were overwhelmingly bad. A mammoth increase in advertising had scarcely budged sales. Profits were way down. The Christmas selling season was the worst in 15 years. One piece of news especially seemed to mock the setting's regal grandeur. Sears, officially, is no longer America's largest retailer. The new king: Wal-Mart, a onetime...

Free-lancing reporters have scored many other coups. Some of the first shots of the mammoth Iraqi-instigated oil slick came from a British ITN crew fully two days before pool footage arrived. A group of nonpool journalists driving near the Iraq-Saudi border last week got a scoop when four hungry Iraqi army deserters approached them and surrendered. Complaints about the pool reports have been growing. "Why didn't we get the oil spill? Why wasn't a pool on the ((battleship)) Missouri when it fired its guns?" asks Thomas Giusto of ABC, who is coordinating pool coverage...
