Last week, Columnist-Crusader Albert Deutsch of the New York Post raised a hue & cry against the dangers of DDT, with a series of articles called "DDT and You." Deutsch based his original assertions on research by Manhattan's Dr. Morton Biskind, printed in The American Journal of Digestive Diseases. Deutsch contended that the mysterious ailment called virus X, which rose to epidemic proportions in Los Angeles about two years ago, has the same symptoms as DDT poisoning and may be traced to indiscriminate use of the chemical. Letters of Gold. This week, on its 25th anniversary as a public institution, the Morgan Library, housed in a Renaissance-style mansion on Manhattan's East 36th Street, paid tribute to its first director. The staff had placed on exhibition some 256 items-the best of the treasures that Belle had bought before her retirement last December. There were the famous incunabula (the library has perhaps the best collection of these pre-16th Century books in the U.S.) and a 9th Century manuscript of the Four Gospels, written in letters of gold. Love In May. Beau James is the Walker story as told by Gene Fowler, whose biographies of other gifted scapegraces (John Barrymore in Good Night, Sweet Prince; Manhattan Lawyer William Fallon in The Great Mouthpiece; Denver Publishers Bonfils and Tammen in Timber Line) were bestsellers. Fowler writes of "the good old days" (a phrase that seems to mean the '205 now) sometimes as if he had a fistful of firecrackers, sometimes as if his pen had a tear duct. But the material (much of it new) lends itself perfectly to the Fowler flair for the sympathetically lusty tale...
