...plays have grown darker and more complex, Broadway has largely abandoned him. Although Communicating Doors, one of his lesser comedies, had a successful run off-Broadway a couple of seasons back and Comic Potential, his latest West End hit, will be produced this fall by the Manhattan Theatre Club, most of Ayckbourn's great comedies of the past couple of decades--Man of the Moment, Henceforward, The Revengers' Comedies, Wildest Dreams--have been performed only rarely in the U.S., and not at all in New York City...

...Highlight Reel:1. On walking through downtown Manhattan on 9/11 after years of reporting in Afghanistan: "Walking in, watching the flames shoot upward, the first thing I thought was that I was back in the Third World. My countrymen were going to think that this was the worst thing that had ever happened, the end of civilization. In the Third World, this sort of thing happened every day: earthquakes, famines, plagues ... Like Hirst, I'm amused by the affluent morons who feel compelled to throw their money at him for the monstrosities that his production lines seemingly roll out in copious quantities. Hirst himself appears to be a thoroughly tortured individual. He deserves that state, for the posthumous indignity to which...
