...Kaplan traces stage fright through three phases, and then sets the phenomenon in Freudian perspective. Stage fright, he notes, usually begins with the actual scheduling of an event. An actor need only recall "the simple fact of the impending performance" to bring on moods of depression, spells of manic agitation, outbursts among intimates. Williams displays a disciplined, unaffected style that, like the early work of John Huston, complements but never dominates the narrative. Barry Gordon, as Paul, is alternately manic and melancholy with equal finesse, and Jon Voight (who made Out of It before Midnight Cowboy) gives the football hero just the right touch of caricature. Out of It lacks the dazzle of The Graduate, but more than compensates with its own air of personal testimony...

Everywhere he went, Brody was accompanied by his 20-year-old bride Renee, a quiet, fey brunette who says she met the heir last December when she was dealing some hashish to a friend of his. On an impulse excursion to Puerto Rico last week, Mike and Renee trailed a cloud of marijuana smoke behind them...

M.A.S.H., one of America's funniest bloody films, is also one of its bloodiest funny films. Though it wears a dozen manic, libidinous masks, none quite covers the face of dread. The time is wartime, any time. Specifically it is the day before yesterday, during the Korean conflict. Somewhere outside Seoul, a group of Army doctors operate -in every sense of the word. Whatever rationality they possess is consumed by the disciplines of surgery. Off-duty they live by a hypocritic oath...
