Between the two major American-flag international airlines, the manifold woes of Pan American have captured most attention. But last week it became evident that Trans World Airlines is also in bad trouble. TWA announced that its losses have gone up, up and away: its deficit topped $88 million during the first five months of 1975-a record, and exactly double the loss during the same period a year ago. Simultaneously, President Forwood C. Wiser Jr.-nicknamed "Bud" by some associates and "Forward Charge" (because of his initials) by employees-quit, along with Marketing Vice President Blaine Cooke...

Gena Rowlands, who is Cassavetes's wife, dominates this uneven film. Her insanity really is a manifold personality: she moves from spasms of manic nervousness to chastened, hurt-animal despair, her foolish smiles rapidly become agonized searchings for approval. The director's over-long focuses on individual actors and his willingness to let them improvise, which made Husbands so tedious, here allows Rowlands at least to show everything she can do. Teng is one of four high-ranking officials (referred to by some Sinologists as "the Four Horsemen of Peking") who are expected collectively to assume Chou's manifold responsibilities if the Premier should pass from the scene. The others: Li Hsien-nien, a jowly, rumpled former Finance Minister, whose current role is overseeing economic development plans; Chang Chun-chiao, thought to be a member of Mme. Mao's leftist clique, who could take over many of Chou...

BEETHOVEN'S Missa Solemnis has a formidable reputation. It poses extraordinary difficulties for performers, and manifold complexities for listeners. More talked-about than played, the Missa is still forbidden territory to many music lovers, even though Beethoven himself once dubbed it his "most successful" work. But a performance like the one conducted by F. John Adams last Friday night can prove that this mass is a moving and uplifting expression of man's relationship to God, and to His universe...
