In the second relay Hoyt lost a yard or two on the first two laps, but regained the distance on the last lap and pressed Mann of Yale closely. The third relay started with Merrihew of Harvard four yards behind Seymour of Yale. This position was maintained until the last lap, when Merrihew sprinted and passed his opponent, finishing five yards in the lead.
