...Branagh foreshadows difficulties he will have with the film's conclusion through the clumsy manner in which he fades to intermission. Hamlet makes a speech reaffirming his zeal for revenge, above a field full of battle-ready Norwegians in the distance. The blue-screen contrivance of Hamlet's locale is obvious, and the soldiers in the distance resemble reassembling chromosomes. An oft-shouting, fiery character to this point, Branagh's Hamlet begins to scream at the top of his voice as the camera pans away. But the booming drums of the soundtrack drown out his already incoherent yelling...

...tenor saxophone and trumpet punching out a melodic complement to the solid rhythm section, the Blue Meanies succeeded in getting the musical juices flowing for the bands to follow, but failed to do anything more in terms of excitement. A notably captivating aspect of the set was the manner in which the lighting was modified to the tempo of each song. Manually operated, the multicolored stage lights were switched on and off faster during the upbeat songs while the slower, drawn-out rhythms calmed the light technician down. Sadly, the Blue Meanies were not much more memorable than that...

Unfortunately, when both actors apply their abilities to Hemingway's story, the result is simple and uninteresting. What before was an intriguing story -- offering all manner of comparison-comments between Hemingway's life and what he portrayed in his writings -- now disappears in the melting goo of a basically standard wartime romance with two people no more glamorized than any other movie stars...
