...difficult vehicle of Scotch dialect. The movement of the story is uninterrupted, the episodes clearly drawn, and the dialect at once consistent and unobtrusive. The tale is better than Mr. Plummer's sketch of a cat which became ship's mascot. This unpromising subject is, however, handled in a manner which, if a trifle juvenile, is far from puerile. The way in which cross-eyed Mike "stared in royal disdain, his left eye terrifying the cats on his right and his right eye appalling those on his left" is amusing. The appreciation of Mr. Jones and "Till Eulenspiegel" seems competent...

...other characters are for the most part ludicrous in themselves, and the situations into which they are put are calculated to bring out their idiosyncrasies in the funniest manner. There is an alderman who "bosses" town and council and is in turn "bossed" by a Xantippian wife. There is a dapper young insurance agent who undertakes to get his friend out of trouble, and instead draws him into a mesh of complications. There is a group of aldermen typifying various stages of conservatism, churlishness and inebriation...

...dream. The author unfortunately at first sets an apparently older tone. There is entertainment also in Percival Reniers '16's article, "Speaking of Trifles," where his potpourri of forced daily themes resembles a theme corrector's nightmare. Of the prose pastels, "Charity" too obviously allies itself in subject and manner to Spoon River...
