...quoted across the board Friday: That she and President Clinton had sexual relations more than a dozen times in his small private study down the hallway from the Oval Office. That Clinton did not consider what they were doing to be sex, allowing for deniability. That, in the normal manner of an affair, they discussed concealing the relationship -- but that Clinton never told Lewinsky...

...section about Dalton, Ga., the "Carpet Capital," described how the city recruited Mexican teachers in order to attract Mexican workers. I found the condescending manner of some Dalton residents outrageous. You quoted an elderly Southern gentleman as saying, "I know these [Mexican] children are here to stay--as butchers, Realtors, car salesmen, physicians." Of course, the "physicians" remark was gratuitous. This man's attitude only reflects the fact that while the Hispanic population in the U.S. may be growing, our children are destined only to service the country's middle class unless they are better educated. ...assassinated by "revolutionaries" who were in reality secret police, and a Prime Minister, Sergei Witte, suspected until the end of his life that the identities of those behind a plot to kill him were known to the Czar. These defects were erased in most people's minds by the manner of the Romanovs' death: the massacre in the cellar of the Ipatiev house in Yekaterinburg, the 12 bullet holes in the body of Alexei--"a beautiful child," one of the executioners recalled--and the way some of the women who hid behind cushions were finished off with bayonets. The killers...

...African-American businessmen benefited from Abiola's largesse, as did the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation: each reportedly received a $250,000 donation. Few people asked where the money came from; even fewer returned it. The currying of favor continued under the brutal reign of Abacha. During that time, all manner of prominent African Americans from Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan to delegations of clergymen, newspaper publishers and businessmen accepted government-sponsored tours of Nigeria, then sang the dictator's praises...

...country today brings out more of the passions--or the hypocrisy--in Washington politicians. Every time they get the chance, those who see profit in it pummel the "butchers in Beijing" about all manner of failings, aiming their blows as much at Clinton as at China's communist die-hards. Antiabortion activists rail at China's forced abortions. Exiled crusader Harry Wu charges China with harvesting human organs from executed prisoners for sale. Human-rights advocates complain that Clinton is ignoring systemic repression; partisans of the Dalai Lama call for a free Tibet; labor advocates bang the drums about unfair...
