Criticism of the Jesus Seminar's open and offensive debunking of Christianity is clearly justified. However, credit should be given to those who would, in an honest and inoffensive manner, examine the historical events surrounding the origins of this religion. The legacy of Jesus, whether he existed or not, has had a tremendous influence on the social and political histories of the past two millenniums. Only a fool of a historian would base his knowledge of this critical period on a single, possibly inaccurate source. More research must be done into the events of the early New Testament. One thing...
...many New Republic veterans were put off by what they described as Sullivan's disingenuous manner, penchant for sizzle over substance, and lack of close involvement in the editorial process. A number of longtime editors, including Jacob Weisberg, Morton Kondracke, Mickey Kaus and Michael Kinsley, left during Sullivan's tenure. And one of his new hires, Ruth Shalit--whose stories included a much discussed piece suggesting favoritism to blacks in the Washington Post newsroom--got in hot water for alleged plagiarism and inaccurate reporting. After initially defending her, Sullivan placed Shalit on a leave of absence...
Gramm was responding in the approved manner. Politicians, most of whom are the sort of people who take themselves too seriously, take very seriously the dangers inherent in appearing to take themselves too seriously. What made Don Imus' speech at the Radio and Television Correspondents' Dinner front-page news was the White House suggestion that C-SPAN not rebroadcast it. That was unusual enough to meet the old city-editor test for a story: man bites dog (no special breed). Politicians are supposed to be nearly insult proof, in the way that people associated with the Mob are libel proof...
...month off. Harvard debated the matter and decided against switching--but the seeds of change had been planted in undergraduates' minds. The 20 intervening years have seen an almost steady stream of attempts to give Harvard students a reasonable calendar, as reform sentiment waxes and wanes in a cyclical manner...
...ability to contain the radical elements of Hamas--until Israel foolishly decided to assassinate one of its leaders for past crimes during a stable cease-fire. The greatest evil that this nascent state can face is civil war--calamitous as that may be--that constitutes the gravest danger. The manner in which Arafat deals with his Islamic opposition, indeed all opposition, will crucially determine the future power of the executive in Palestine, and, hence, the nature of its civil society and its government. As an Arab, I am greatly ashamed by the fact that Arab regimes from the Gulf...
