Carter writes lengthy mysteries in the manner of Scott Turow, though New England White often feels less like a mystery than just a story told very, very slowly and in the wrong order, thereby generating "suspense." Our leading couple are Lemaster Carlyle, the icily principled president of a Yale-esque university, and his mercurial wife Julia, a dean at the university's divinity school. They are, yes, rich and members of what they call the "darker nation." One snowy night they discover a corpse by the side of a road. It is that of Kellen Zant, a faculty member, also...

...Mariane herself and Angelina Jolie is wonderful in the part. Visibly pregnant, surrendering to despair only in private, sometimes angry, but usually upbeat and commonsensical, we gain an extraordinary sense of a woman hiding her vulnerability, her essential aloneness at the center of the storm, beneath a consistently positive manner. This woman is never, seemingly, out of control. How difficult that must have been is underscored by Winterbottom's portrayal of Karachi. The word "teeming" does not begin to describe this huge and jumbled urban mass, this warren of narrow traffic-clogged streets. Who is a friend...

...jitsu master with a gothic tattoo on his forearm that reads "Jesus." "There are no other women to train with here, so I use men and it's pretty intense and rigorous," says Porto, who despite her fierce reputation in the ring is well-spoken and has a gentle manner, especially with her dog, an uncharacteristically calm pit bull named Hannah. Training takes place in the small community center in Jua, her gritty small hometown of 150,000 in the interior of Sao Paulo state. It is an all-day affair, with a few breaks for meals and rest...
