Director Trevor Nunn and designer John Napier, the Cats team, have fashioned one coup de theatre after another, reprising Wilder's opening with the newly deceased hero (Alan Campbell as Joe Gillis) facedown in a swimming pool, and working up to a levitating mansion. This larger-than-larger-than-life approach ; doomed the gentle Aspects, but it suits the more histrionic material of Sunset. Some of the lyrics, though, have got to go. To have Joe sing that L.A. has changed a lot "since those brave gold rush pioneers/ Came in their creaky covered wagons" is ridiculous. L.A. barely existed...

Gingrich and the other Republicans had reason to be cocksure of their standing. Not a single Republican member of the Senate or the House was defeated last week; not a single Republican resident of a Governor's mansion was evicted. The anger of the electorate was anything but inchoate. It was neatly targeted. The Democrats were seen -- not unreasonably, given their control of the White House and Capitol Hill -- as the Establishment and were made to pay. The anger was not indiscriminate. The two most outrageous Republican offerings, the vacuous Michael Huffington and the felonious Oliver North, together spent more...

Duran pleaded not guilty to the 11-count indictment, which included charges of assaulting Secret Service agents, destroying federal property and illegal weapons possession. Duran, 26, was found competent to stand trial after a note was found hinting at his intentions. And today, Holder chastised...

...slugs fired in anger until Oct. 29, when the brooding Colorado Springs upholsterer Francisco Martin Duran, 26, pulled a Chinese-made SKS semiautomatic assault weapon from under his coat and shot 27 rounds of ammunition in short bursts across the north side of the building. Five bullets pocked the mansion's 4-ft.-thick sandstone wall, and three shattered a window and chipped the stone of the press-briefing room near the West Wing. Several bullets burrowed into trees. President Clinton, who was inside the White House watching a football game, was probably the safest person in the area, given...
