Several newcomers, most notably Williams (who did Mary J. Blige's lush clip Everything), Paul Hunter (Erykah Badu, Sean "Puffy" Combs), Jonathan Glazer (Radiohead, Jamiroquai) and Floria Sigismondi (Marilyn Manson, Tricky), have risen to the challenge. As a result, the directors themselves are becoming MTV stars. Williams and Hunter have almost become brand names; each has a colorful, highly recognizable style, and hip-hop stars--and even some alternative bands--are rushing to work with them. All four of these directors are up for multiple awards at next week's MTV Music Video Awards, and all four are starting...

Sigismondi, 31, who was born in Italy and lives in Canada, says she never aims to shock, though she usually strikes a nerve: "I try and look for beauty in darkness, to make some kind of harmony in the images." In her video for shock-rocker Manson's Tourniquet, we are treated to the sight of Manson shaving his own armpit; in Sigismondi's clip for The Beautiful People, we see writhing worms, rows of stomping fascistic boots and Manson's mouth pushed open by some cruel dental device. In a TIME/CNN survey of graduating seniors in 13 high schools along Highway 50, very few of them sounded like Marilyn Manson (rock bogeyman). A few of them sounded like the Brady Bunch (holy innocents). A lot of them reminded us of Lisa Simpson (cartoon goddess--aware of life's shadows, inclined to make for the light). Three-fourths hold the sobering belief that we are pulling apart as a nation rather than coming together...

...other assassins are driven to assassination by personal problems. Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme (Candace Hoyes '99) and Sara Jane Moore (Jennifer Tattenbaum '98) plot to kill Ford because of their obsessions with Charles Manson, while John Hinckley (Andrew Hamlen) resorts to attempting to kill Reagan to attract Jodie Foster's attention. The scene in which Fromme and Moore decide to kill Ford was the funniest in the whole production: the rapid-fire non sequiturs were played perfectly. Their psychological problems--derived from disastrous relationships with their fathers--reach a peak as they address Colonel Sanders' picture on a Kentucky Fried Chicken...

...those odd confluences that keep cults and conspiracy theorists percolating, the day after the bodies were found Charles Manson was up for and denied parole for the ninth time at Corcoran State Prison. "These monks that just took their heads in San Diego," Manson noted at his hearing, "they're way behind the times." But cult experts disagree. What happened in San Diego, they say, was unprecedented. James Tabor, who teaches religion at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and was involved in the last desperate attempts to communicate with David Koresh by radio broadcast, says, "This group...
