...wage deals on a plant-by-plant basis. Fewer than half of the factories in eastern Germany are under the national wage contracts. "It's a concern for us," says Klaus Mehrens, head of IG Metall in the western state of Hesse. The union represents both professional and manual workers at covered businesses, although membership for white-collar employees is only about 50% compared with 75% for blue-collar workers. IG Metall is trying to expand its ranks by branching out into service industries, "but I can't say we've been very successful," Mehrens concedes. Even if there...
...wild popularity of the column is largely due to Krinsky’s unflinching and vivid candor. In her Oct. 26, 2001, column “Manual manipulation: a dying art,” for example, Krinsky bemoans the handjob’s disappearance from the love repertoire, a change that she claims essentially removes third base from the sexual infield—leaving couples to either jump the canyon to home plate or hunker down at second for the long haul...
Author of What Would Machiavelli Do? and a columnist for FORTUNE magazine, Bing has written a wry 21st century courtier's manual that irreverently harnesses the wisdom of the ancient Zen masters. The adventurous can backpack through Europe or Asia. The science-concentrating seniors may journey to Cambridge’s illustrious bio labs to complete their theses. The semi-secret Sorrento Square social organization which used to occasionally publish a so-called humor magazine might choose to crash at Hugh Hefner?...
Some users may be shocked that Nikon chose to leave out a manual viewfinder. But in my outdoor tests, I didn't miss it. The screen is so bright that even in direct sunlight on the Golden Gate Bridge, I could see myself grinning into the camera. My only real criticism is that the 2500's resolution is 2.1 megapixels, when 3.5-megapixel cameras have broken through the $700 price barrier. Most amateurs will not spot the difference unless they want prints larger than 8 in. by 10 in. Until I turn pro, the Coolpix 2500 is everything my shirt...
