Experts say that taking time to share a home-cooked meal helps frazzled families re-connect. But as overscheduled moms, dads and kids can attest, that's easier said than done. To the rescue comes The Working Parents Cookbook, a lifestyle and culinary manual by Jeff Morgan, a Napa Valley vintner and journalist, and his social-worker wife Jodie, who are raising teenage daughters. Most of their 200 recipes take less than 30 minutes to prepare and feature straightforward directions. The dishes are wholesome but far from humdrum: salads range from Caesar to nicoise; entrees include tuna steaks and lamb...
...first round-the two finalists will focus much of their attention on trying to woo voters who had supported Wiranto. But with the race still tight and many votes yet to be tallied, Golkar officials refuse to count their man out. "We have to wait for the manual count to be finished before we really know what position we have come in," says campaign chairman Slamet Effendy Yusuf...
...credibility. A Pentagon official tells TIME that Rumsfeld is arguing privately to declassify the interrogation techniques because, coming out piecemeal, they are doing a lot of political damage. Some high-ranking military officials, however, say that al-Qaeda already trains its recruits on techniques in the Army field manual, and that if the other ones are made public, the terrorists could use that to their advantage. Things could get even worse. A Republican Senator says charges of manslaughter and rape may soon be brought against U.S. personnel involved in handling detainees in Iraq and Afghanistan...
Brasco's account is a how-to manual for made men, with chapters such as "How Wiseguys Take Over a Business" (start violent fights in a bar, then press the owner for "insurance protection") and "Wiseguy Table Manners" (tough guys order before the ladies). Given the colorful subject matter, his writing at times seems a bit dry, even formal. (Maybe that's because Pistone was in law enforcement, used to filling out just-the-facts-ma'am crime reports.) Still, the skinny here is often sensational, and reading the section about how to carry out a hit will almost make...
Administration officials can't seem to agree on much about those rules. During his Hill testimony, intelligence chief Alexander held up an Army field manual that governs interrogation and said the procedures used in Iraq were the ones authorized in the book. Cambone and then Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz claimed they knew nothing of the tougher techniques allowing hard-pressure tactics. Though they have uncovered no paper trail, Senators were openly skeptical that Cambone and his bosses would have been in the dark about the procedures, since Miller reported directly to the Pentagon. Other Pentagon officials said Sanchez...
