This is no glorified babysitting service. Mom can't swing by with a sob story about the pressures of modern parenting, unload her brood and zip off to the spa. The screening questions are intense, and parents--75% of whom earn less than $10,000 a year--have to map out a recovery plan. If there's a hint of abuse, a call goes out to the county child-welfare authorities...
...seas. Local impact remains unpredictable: some areas could suffer stronger storms and other places severe drought. Seven environmental groups--Environmental Defense Fund, Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club, Union of Concerned Scientists, U.S. Public Interest Research Group, World Resources Institute and World Wildlife Fund--have put together a world map showing "early-warning signs" of global warming. An apt analogy would be to say that the artist has ceded to the architect. That is to say, Metheny has selflessly concealed his artistic biases to create a non-intrusive score for a film and not a masterpiece...
...today, leaders from around the globe began a 10-day United Nations summit in Kyoto, Japan to address the threat of global climate change. While the risks posed by such change have not disappeared, serious proposals to mitigate climate change (or "global warming") have vanished from the political map. After two years of stasis, it is high time that the United States face the problem of a changing climate and take positive steps to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions...
