Harvard students are known for keeping multiple balls in the air, but Zach Warren has taken the skill to a whole new level. Warren, a Harvard Divinity School student, set a Guinness World Record for the “fastest marathon while juggling three objects” with a time of 3:07:05—an average time of 7:08 per mile— at the Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 20. The previous Guinness Record was held by Canadian marathon runner Michal E. Kapral, who completed the course in 3:07:46 earlier this year. Warren said...
...City may be the capital of drive-through weddings, but traffic on the Strip can be a drag. So in a nod to impatient (and fit) couples, the New Las Vegas Marathon, on Dec.4, will include a Run-Thru Chapel near the five-mile mark, where at least 22 couples plan to get married en masse. Running with them will be the minister, lots of Elvis impersonators--like these recent marathoners in Phoenix, Ariz., right--and an estimated 13,000 others tackling a 26.2-mile course that includes the entire Strip, closed off to cars. While lite runners...
WATER Staying hydrated while exercising is important, but drinking too much water can be as dangerous as not drinking enough. Research showed that hydrating too much over the long haul--during a marathon, say, or a long-distance bike ride--dilutes the blood's salt content and can lead to hyponatremia. The body's cells, including brain cells, absorb the excess fluid and swell, and growing pressure in the skull can cause permanent damage or death. Hyponatremia is surprisingly common; in a study of 488 runners of the 2002 Boston Marathon, 13% were over-hydrated. Many of the symptoms...
...Undergraduate Council (UC) voted at last night’s marathon meeting to extend debate and push back a vote on a constitutional amendment that would create an independent body to coordinate social events. The amendment—introduced at last week’s meeting—would dissolve the Campus Life Committee (CLC) and replace it with a directly-elected Social Events Committee (SEC) that would be charged with planning campus-wide social events but would not be part of the UC. After a meeting that lasted for over four hours, several members proposed to extend debate until...
Buffett is in no rush, though, and you shouldn't be either. Wait for energy stocks to come down another 10%. What looks best? Pennington favors refiners like Valero and Marathon, which he believes will be running at full capacity for the next five years. He also likes natural-gas firms such as Quicksilver and Nabors because he expects natural-gas prices to trend higher even as oil falls. Natural gas is more difficult to transport. It will take years to build enough transportation capacity to meet demand without higher prices in the U.S., where gas fields are losing steam...
