Students of history should be informed that in reality Atchison was never President of the United States. Polk was President until midnight (not noon, as Mr. Britt says) of March 3, 1849, and promptly thereafter Taylor became President. The Constitution provides, concerning the Presidents: "Before he enter on the execution of his office, he shall take the following oath. . . ." President Taylor took this oath at noon on March 5 because he had no occasion to enter on the execution...
