...California Medical Marijuana Fight: Up in Smoke? U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder indicated on March 18 that he would not prosecute sellers of medical marijuana where it is legal under state law, reversing the Bush Administration's zero-tolerance policy. A federal judge in Los Angeles has already postponed the sentencing of a convicted marijuana-dispensary operator, asking the Justice Department to further clarify its stance...

...state funeral, but in other respects, the March 22 death of Jade Goody, 27, proved that the British reality-TV star had come closer than any of her compatriots--certainly closer than any royal--to filling the gap in public life left by Princess Diana. The street outside Goody's house swiftly disappeared under a snowfall of bouquets and soft toys, the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition issued solemn statements, and newspapers published commemorative editions. Goody's image could shift newsprint like no other celebrity since Diana...

...convenient and long-standing tradition in Mexico to blame its problems on the U.S.--and one that's now finding agreement from surprising quarters. "Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade," declared U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton en route to Mexico on March 25. "Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border ... causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians." Mexico has seen more than 7,000 drug-related killings since early 2008, and the violence now threatening to spill north hasn't escaped attention. Late last year, somewhat hyperbolically...

Your article "Africa, Business Destination" was a welcome recognition of the importance of trade and business development as tools for combating poverty [March 23]. But I have to correct a suggestion in the piece that Bono and Bob Geldof seek to represent Africans in their work as activists. They work in partnership with leading Africans but never suggest they represent Africans. Bono and Geldof represent themselves and others who want to see the world's richest governments keep the commitments they have made to Africa. These two have also argued that trade and investment will be more important than...

...just had to shake my head at Newt Gingrich's article [March 23]. In President Barack Obama's two months in office, Gingrich says, he "has so far failed to turn around the economic decline." It took the Republicans eight years to get us into this mess with their nonexistent oversight of financial companies and their allowing the deficit to balloon to $10 trillion. In the end, all Gingrich can offer as an answer is Contract with America 2.0--which consists mostly of tax cuts. It's the old trickle-down economics with a fresh paint job. I'd much...
