Perhaps we should have known it was too good to be true. Last Friday, the Florida Supreme Court, by a narrow 4-3 margin, ruled in favor of an electoral contest suit filed by Vice President Al Gore '69. The ruling rightly set in motion a method of counting the over 43,000 ballots that voting machines had not counted, working to ensure every voter's voice was heard and the winner--whose identity was and is unknown--could rightfully receive Florida's electoral votes through certification tomorrow. Counting these undervotes. not just in Democratic counties, but across the state...

...Justices rule in favor of Bush that the Florida Supreme Court wrongly extended the certification deadline to include hand counts. The legal effect of this decision would actually be quite small. Bush's lead would increase from 537 votes to the earlier margin of 930 votes, but Gore could still proceed with his contest before Judge Sauls, which is based on a different set of laws entirely. The idea gets mixed reviews among Dickinson's students. "It reeks of affirmative action," says physics major Michelle Edwards. But Massa emphasizes that "the men we admitted were as qualified as the women...

...again, some surprise sector will have soared. Who thought utilities would rise 40% this year? Reasonable candidates to charge ahead next are energy (if oil stays over $25 per bbl.) and regional banks (if severe credit problems don't surface and the Fed cuts rates). Get rid of margin debt, definitely. And lower your expectations for future returns. But stay invested. Everyone in my small survey expected the Dow to be hitting new highs sometime next year...
