Peachum, a greedy and self-righteous rascal, and his alcholic wife (Margo Martindale) want better for their son-in-law than an infamous criminal. With little virtue of their own of which to boast, they bribe one of Mac's whores, Jenny Diver (Tiina Cartmell), into betraying him to the police. Scotland Yard is led by Mac's old army buddy, the powerful Tiger-Brown (Patrick Clean), whose own daughter Lucy (Cynthia Dickason) is also married secretly to Mac. Mac is arrested twice. Applause. In 1970 Lauren Bacall won a Tony for her lead role in this Broadway musical based on the Oscar-winning film, "All About Eve." Bacall repeats her performance for this television adaptation along with another veteran from the Broadway show, Penny Fuller. Bacall plays Margo Channing, a seasoned theater star and Fuller is Eve Harrington, the conniving novice out to win everything Margo has worked so hard to attain, including her fiance and her fame. Probably the best show this week. Ch. 7, 9:00 p.m. 2 hours...

Several numbers are choreographed on multiple levels, which helps relieve congestion on the small Leverett stage...

Fortunately, the cast's energy and several outstanding principals protect Michael L. Blau's worthwhile producation. Eden Lee Murray does a remarkable job of building the character of Margo Channing even where the script is most bare. A star at the peak of her adult career, she is torn by suspicion and self-doubt, the products of fading youth. What emerges is a sensitive, mature woman equipped with an actress's command of gesture and expression. Murray handles her songs and dance routines with poise and vitality, but more important, never loses a grip on the character she has created...

...Shotwell's Eve Harrington furnishes the essential complement to Margo. She plays the gentle, stage-struck newcomer who, after being cared for by Margo, reveals herself to be ruthlessly ambitious. It is a difficult role, calling for a complete yet convincing character change. Shotwell captures the look and manner of a naive country girl, and then with an adept change of expression emerges as a four-star bitch...
