...Bulow's stepson found in the accused's locked closet--became tangible symbols the masses could feel Frank J. Walters Jr., the 35-year-old assistant who was indicted last year with Locke but who later testified against his boss in order to keep a newly adopted child; and Maria Schrallhammer, the maid of 23 years who in her sharp German accent and precise detailed accounts "nailed" her master by testifying that he refused, both Decembers, to call a doctor though he knew his wife was sick both became instant celebrities...
Cast in the "American" style, but darkened by German guilt feelings about the country's recent past, the film becomes a kind of German Vietnam movie. But unlike Fasbinder (in The Marriage of Maria Braun and Lili Marleen), Schloendorff (in The Tin Drum), and Syberberg (in Our Hitler), director Wolfgang Petersen avoids discussing the complexities of the political, psychological, and cultural roots of the "German catastrophe" and presents, instead, a soldier's-eye view of the war. After one such visit, a clergyman last week reported Solidarity Leader Lech Walesa to be in "perfect" mental health and "full of enthusiasm." The priest, Henryk Jankowski of Gdansk, was allowed to meet with Walesa to arrange the baptism of his seventh child, Maria Victoria, born on Jan. 27. Her alleged crime: consistently checking in to her office at 11 a.m. and leaving at 1 p.m., thus working only two of the six daily hours required. Alessandro Vigneri, 29, police claim, should have been handling baggage at Fiumicino Airport instead...
...amateur golf champion and professional basketball coach, Manotoc disappeared Dec. 29 after a quiet, private dinner at a Manila restaurant with Maria Imelda ("Imee") Marcos, 26. The couple had been wed in a civil ceremony in Arlington, Va., three weeks earlier, after Manotoc had obtained a quickie divorce from his first wife, in the Dominican Republic. The bride's family took a dim view of the pairing, however, and the groom's family subsequently accused the Marcoses of involvement in his disappearance...
