When the news broke on Wednesday, the correspondents were already deep into their reporting. Simmons Fentress was at the White House to gauge the presidential reaction and future course. Neil MacNeil, chief congressional correspondent, was busy interviewing Kentucky's Marlow Cook and other crucial Senators. John Austin, who covers Congress with MacNeil, focused his reporting on Indiana's Birch Bayh, leader of the Carswell opposition. An occasional home run doesn't always redeem a low batting average...
...Veteran Senator Frank Carlson's Republican seat. Author of a Food-for-Peace amendment that now sends U.S. farmers as technical advisers abroad, Nixon-back-er Dole easily beat out Democratic Candidate William I. Robinson, a Wichita lawyer. Kentucky. As chief executive officer of Jefferson County (Louisville), Republican Marlow W. Cook, 42, was prepared for advancement. His hard-line policy on Viet Nam and tough stand on riots appealed to Kentucky voters more than the moderately liberal philosophy of his Democratic opponent, former Kentucky Commissioner of Commerce Katherine G. Peden, only woman member of the Kerner Commission on Civil...
