Nygaard's sweeping knowledge of music gave rise to innovative, widely admired concert programs, often featuring works by Mozart (such as Symphony No. 41, "Jupiter," for which the orchestra was named). Nygaard raised money for the symphony himself; during one lean period, he paid each of his musicians with subway tokens and a book of sonnets...
