Democracy: The series has no smooth football star on trial for the murder of his beautiful wife, no American prince plunging his plane into the black waters off Martha's Vineyard and, so far, no Monica. Yet cable is getting sky-high ratings for the first time since Donato Dalrymple, the house cleaner-fisherman, hid Elian from Janet Reno's SWAT team...

...carpetbagging charge faded because Clinton was there so much. She even gave up time in the glittery New York outpost of Martha's Vineyard to vacation amid the blackflies of Skaneateles. She was the first up and last to bed, handshaking her way through county fairs and college campuses, just plain outworking her opponent. And as much as yuppie women may have been skeptical of Hillary's motives, upstate women of a certain age greeted her like Oprah, an avatar of spiritual renewal touching down in Poughkeepsie. They turned out for her, stayed afterward, lined up for autographs. Her first...

Brown, 37, is vying for the title of Martha Stewart to the Gen X crowd. Emulating Martha, she is trying to build a one-woman industry with two antique store-cafes called GOAT in Los Angeles and Mackinac Island, Mich. Her first book has a whimsical, quirky quality. Besides recipes, Brown includes party "projects" that involve such unlikely components as ink pads and door jambs. Still, her exuberance is contagious...

In the other corner of the nursery are William and Martha Sears, authors of The Baby Book. The Searses are proponents of holding, swaddling, nursing and co-sleeping in the family bed. Both sides offer plenty of advice, and both are quite dogmatic. It's my feeling that sleepless parents should do whatever works, borrowing as necessary from both camps...

Schlesinger can be self-important (the dinners on Martha's Vineyard with movie stars, the lunches at Manhattan's Mortimer's restaurant with the society crowd). He indulges the old New Deal intellectual's habit of bashing business and businessmen in an almost recreational way. (At one point he blithely equates capitalism with sexism and racism.) But even his smugness has a certain hilarious pungency. He records the time in London toward the end of the war when a V-1 bomb fell close by; everyone else in his office fell to the floor, but as a co-worker...
