...auctioned off by the unsalaried consuls of small nations. In Berlin, Warsaw, Kaunas or Stockholm the pattern is the same. Some consuls were reported busily selling citizenship over the counter, then adding the stipulation that the refugee never enter his adopted country. The Japanese liner Ginyo Maru, which docked in Panama three weeks ago, was filled with Jewish refugees who had paid from 2,000 to 6,000 marks ($2,400) for Latin-American visas, which proved worthless when presented...
...reprieve. Last week, with a new passport obligingly issued by the German Legation in Montevideo, he thwarted Argentina again. Uruguayan police relented, granted him permission to sail for Rio de Janeiro, where he could catch a LATI plane for Italy. Steaming north aboard the Japanese Hawaii Maru, he had one more hurdle ahead: Brazil had not authorized his landing at Rio, so he would be forced to remain aboard ship until his plane left...
Last month an anonymous British cruiser fired across the bows of the Japanese liner Asama Maru, only 35 miles off Japan's naval base of Yokosuka. Great Britain cited her rights under a convention of 1909 (never ratified) which says that persons liable to military service for an enemy may be removed by a belligerent from neutral...

S. meals per day, fishing for pogies & perch off Angel Island stringers and smoking the catch for 'tween-meal tidbits, going to one movie a week as guests of the U. S. Army across the island at Fort McDowell. Now that they might not travel in Japanese ships, as planned...
...afterwards. Last week Japan chose to let the end of her trade treaty with the U. S. - a really serious incident - pass with hardly an official sigh but spilled a hot lava of diplomatic hate on Great Britain over a comparatively microscopic incident - the stopping of the liner Asama Maru by a British cruiser while 21 German reservists were taken off (TIME...
