There's a new epic form of movies: the documentary. There, and not in most Hollywood narratives, is where you find huge issues and outsize personalities. Truth isn't always stranger than a Marvel comics movie, but it's often more complex and compelling. If nonfiction can outsell novels on the best-seller lists, and 60 Minutes stay near the top of the TV ratings for 40 years, why can't real stories on the movie screen seem more vivid than invented ones...
...show from brothers Larry and Andy Wachowski, who in 1999 stamped the template for high-IQ effects entertainment with The Matrix. I don't think it'll do half of Iron Man's first-weekend business, but it's certainly got twice the visual dazzlement of that very handsome Marvel Comics movie...
Iron Man is based on a marvel comic character introduced in 1963, Speed Racer on the Japanese animated TV series Mach GoGoGo, launched in 1967. The two new movies share the scientific optimism of that time, when the study of physics was, briefly, both a patriotic duty and a nifty option for American students; when doctors began installing artificial hearts; when President Kennedy said we'd go to the moon within a decade...
...smart, kid-friendly epic - that few other cinemas even aspire to, and none can touch. When it works, as it does here, it rekindles even a cynic's movie love. So cheers to Downey, Favreau and the Iron Man production company. They don't call it Marvel for nothing...
