THIS WAS ALL very depressing, especially on this particular kind of morning. But the final candidacy that ruined my morning was the election for the state senate in my district. Opposing William Brotherton, incumbent and senate president, was Marvin Horan. Marvin Horan is a truck driver-turned-preacher at the First Independent Calvary Baptist Chruch of Witcher's Creek, West Virginia. He is presently appealing his three-year sentence for blowing up Midway Elementary School during the textbook issue. I just didn't want to look at the big pink road map after that...

Funky Spirit. It is an unusual place to look for truth, but Bob Rafelson makes movies (Five Easy Pieces, The King of Marvin Gardens) in which that search is always eccentric, the conclusion indefinite. Like Bobby Dupea, the runaway pianist of Five Easy Pieces, Craig is spiritually disenfranchised, in flagrant rebellion against his class. Craig revels in the funky spirit at the Olympic, and Rafelson, with his offbeat sense of humor, his knack for visual surprise, turns the spa into a suitably shabby field of honor. Joe Santo trains for the Mr. Universe competition by pressing weights in a Batman...

...latest LP, "This is It" is anything but. The producer, disco king Van McCoy (the creator of last summer's hit, "The Hustle"), tries to prop up Moore's small voice with layers of insistent drumming, strings and background voices. The arrangements lie somewhere between the lushness of Marvin Gaye and the overkill-extravaganza of Barry White, but they are totally unsuited to Moore. She screams and whines a lot (probably to make herself heard), and the end result is unnecessarily strident, not soulful. She should return to the concept of "Peach Melba," released a few months ago--a simple...

...same time, new agencies like the seven-year-old Scali, McCabe, Sloves are zooming to the forefront with a tough-minded style that stresses product features. The agency and its principals-Ed McCabe and Marvin Sloves-pitch for Volvo and have brought the brand name to the poultry business with fabulously successful ads for Perdue chickens. They feature a squeaky-voiced Frank Perdue telling consumers with mock solemnity that it "takes a tough man to make a tender chicken" and insisting that his birds are more pampered than the people who eat them...
