...book falls into two almost exact halves, the first of which will interest only the economist who wishes to explore the complexities of Marx's thought down to its roots. The second part of the book, however, is the first effective treatment of the Marxian view of world history yet published. Dr. Sweezy is a convinced Marxist--the reader cannot escape that fact--but his thought is refreshingly free of the usual overtones of a commentator dangling at the end of Browder's tether. This volume is the work of a pure Marxian Socialist, not of a self-contradicting member...

Whether this book will "convert" many of its readers is quite another problem. Most of the stock counter-arguments to Marxian thought can be levelled against this, the most recent addition to the subject. Sister Eileen innocently entices into their manic ménage their landlord (George Tobias), a Harpo-Marxian painter with delusions of genius; the Harold-Teenish manager of a drugstore; a crafty reporter (Allyn Joslyn); six lighthearted cadets from the Portuguese merchant marine. Eileen's global charms inspire the sailors to do a mass conga that lands her in jail. At last Sister Ruth's stories...

Died. Rev. Conrad le Despenser Roden Noel, 73, vicar of Thaxted, England, whose crusty championship of Marxian socialism had made his modest Essex vicarage a center of political and ecclesiastical turmoil since his appointment in 1910. Known as "the Red vicar," Father Noel once flew a red flag from his steeple, during World War I hung the green banner of the Irish Sinn Fein party near his pulpit, refused to permit the British Union Jack in his church...
