...dead man was Joseph McCann, 25, commander of the first battalion of the I.R.A.'s Marxist-leaning Official wing in Belfast. A semilegendary hero to the I.R.A. gunmen, he had eluded capture by the British for more than two years-a fact that spawned his nickname, "Joe the Fox." It was said that he had shot as many as 15 British soldiers. McCann's luck ran out when police plainclothesmen spotted him in a narrow Belfast thoroughfare called Joy Street. As he tried to run, he was shot and killed by soldiers...
...substantial blocks of stock shortly before announcement in mid-1971 of the settlement-an announcement that temporarily knocked down the stock price. Then the assault was heated to new intensity as Columnist Jack Anderson (TIME cover, April 3) published authentic-looking ITT memos describing a 1970 plan to prevent Marxist Salvador Allende from taking office as President of Chile by causing "economic collapse" in that country. In February, the Chilean Congress, which is dominated by the opposition Christian Democratic and National parties, passed a constitutional reform bill that would prohibit the President from nationalizing any more private firms without congressional approval. If it should become law, the ban would be retroactive to October 1971. Last week Allende angrily vetoed the bill. He further declared that if his veto were overridden, he would introduce a measure to dissolve the Congress, and if Congress...
...display of sympathy for the gunned-down terrorists, Marxist groups set off bombs in Istanbul, and university students in Ankara boycotted classes. The Turkish army proceeded to round up 40 suspected guerrilla ringleaders. So far, in a crackdown on left-wing terrorism, nearly 1,500 people have been arrested or placed on trial. Last week's shootout seemed likely to make that crackdown even tougher...
