...focus and heightens the emotional pitch of the play. Its theme comes across with blinding clarity - failure is the only sin Americans will not forgive. And Miller's language, often criticized as pedestrian, has been scoured to spareness since 1949. All in all, a redoubtable revival of a masterwork of the American theater...

...uncertainty that comes with getting it all before you have wanted it long or hard enough. MacLaine is a familiar character, and the film makers are careful to make him selfish and artistically ambitious beyond his true abil ity. The movie's funniest sequence is MacLaine's masterwork, a rock chorale dedicated to sanctifying women and fea turing the composer himself - singing like an androgynous elf, surrounded by hundreds of young girls, dressed in brid al gowns and crooning fervently...

...Threepenny Opera continues its smash run at the Loeb this week. Everyone who sees this production of Brecht's masterwork praises it, and about the only fault to be found with the whole show is that some of the actors aren't up to snuff as singers. So what? The Summer Rep has reportedly realized all the political potential of the play, and that alone is reason enough to go see it. Shows tonight thru Thursday begin at 8; for the next two days admission is $4.95, the price goes up a buck on Thursday...
