WASHINGTON, D.C.: Now that Bob Dole has wrapped up the Republican presidential nomination, he must begin contemplating his choice for running mate. On Wednesday, Gov. Christie Todd Whitman said she told the Dole campaign she wants to remain governor of New Jersey and has no interest in joining Dole on the GOP ticket. "I told him that I appreciate all this discussion that was going on, but indicated that I still wanted to stay in the state of New Jersey," Whitman said. "So I'm going to continue to be governor of the state of New Jersey...

In one program designed to help users sort their E-mail, Maes let slightly different agents compete for the user's approval; the most favored were allowed to "mate" and pass their "genetic code" on to the next generation. More than just a whimsical mimicry of living processes, the tactic may actually be, in Maes' view, the only way for agents to keep pace with people's rapidly changing tastes in a network like the Internet. "In my vision...

Golisano, president and CEO of Paychex Inc., a Rochester payroll servicing company. If Weicker and Golisano reach an agreement, they would immediately commence petition drives to get on state ballots. Weicker, who was a maverick in the Republican party while in the Senate, became Connecticut's first independent governor in 1990. Golisano ran unsuccessfully in New York's 1994 gubernatorial race as a third-party candidate. TIME sources...

...Clinton," he said. Dole easily beat rival Pat Buchanan in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, pushing him past the 996 mark in delegates needed for the nomination. Buchanan has vowed to stay in the race in an effort to shape the GOP platform and Dole's choice for running mate. Dole ran unsuccessfully for his party's nomination in 1980 and 1988. In 1988, Dole lost the New Hampshire primary to George Bush and could not recover. This year, Dole rebounded from losses in three of the first five primaries -- including New Hampshire -- to win the last 22 contests...
