...fast pace of "Kong" reminds me of other films from the '30s that have the same breakneck speed, most particularly the work of W. S. Van Dyke in "Tarzan and His Mate," "Trader Horn" and my favorite, "San Francisco." Certainly influenced by Cooper-Schoedsack (some of their jungle footage turns up in both "Horn" and "Tarzan"), Van Dyke sets up the plot and gets us involved in the characters with an economy that is unimaginable today...

He grabbed a pot and banged loudly on it with a knife, calling all the neighbors into his house. He pointed the knife at his wife and demanded: "Where was she between 4 p.m. and now? ...Gore, by contrast, ran a somewhat Gramscian campaign, noodling themes of class warfare and identity politics, speaking on the veiled premise that society is divided between oppressors and oppressed, between bloated white Republican clubmen and a rainbow coalition of everyone else. Oddly enough, Gore's running mate, Joe Lieberman, had been on record as a devout Tocquevillian, on the side of religion, morality, patriotism and the American exceptionalism - the United Colors of Bill Bennett. Or at least he was Tocquevillian until Gore telephoned. Lieberman sold a few of his principles down the river to run with the Gramscians...
