...conceived Moment by Moment as an extended stand-up routine or as a screwball romance along the lines of the old Carole Lombard-William Powell comedy, My Man Godfrey (which is quoted in the film). But the movie's subject, a liaison between a bored Beverly Hills matron and a younger man, is too provocative to be entirely laughed away. Wagner deals with this dilemma by switching her tone from scene to scene, almost always without warning. Embarrassingly enough, the sentimental moments are far funnier than Wagner's wisecracks about Southern California mores. The suds are soon indistinguishable...
Then again, the living characters seem hardly worthy of the honor. Louisa Hufstader's medieval matron is suitably doughty and prim, and Dan Jacobs as the chaplain manages to draw some laughs via his doddering devotion to his viol. But Win Hoover, in a pivotal role as the elder of the conniving brothers, is too easygoing to contemplate chicanery. His gestures toward the women he supposedly desires are unbelievably half-hearted. Marie Richards as the timid Alizon does little to stir passion in any of her suitors, and with the other supporting players is humorlessly one-dimensional...

Last week one Manhattan matron and keeper of 22 cats sent an urgent bulletin to her sister in Massachusetts: Load the station wagon with Boston Globes and come quick...
...because of the devalued dollar and the fact that markups, taxes and tariffs are lower in the U.S. than in many other countries. An article in the Paris trend-setting fashion magazine Elle has attracted many French women to Filene's basement, citadel of the frugal New England matron, for frocks that sell for a fraction of the price in Paris boutiques. On Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, Calif, Middle Eastern and Japanese tourists snap up $700 Omega watches, $500 Gucci handbags and $500 Brioni suits. While those prices seem stiff, they are often less than half what they...
