...Dublin dialect, while invariably musical, is sometimes irritatingly impenetrable. In a troupe that plays well, but not always together, Cyril Cusack stands out as a sly, roguish charmer. Siobhan McKenna, a woman seemingly larger of spirit than any role she fills, makes Bessie Burgess a matron of blood, steel and tears. T.E. Kalem

...lovely women could not care less. They are detectives working undercover to investigate the strange goings-on at a prison farm, and becoming prisoners of that institution is the only way they can do their jobs. They are also, however, nice girls, and their cool quickly disappears as a matron, dressed SS style, clearly lesbian in sexual orientation, growls: "O.K., girls, strip down to your birthday suits." I first met her on the bus to my relative's house; she was the stout matron, slouched in a rear seat with lumpy plastic sacks packed against it. A younger woman staggered up the steps moaning, "God, I'm tired." So Stout, bridling at her gall, blurted, "Tired! What've you got to be tired about?" And the rest went sort of like this...

...close to church, flag and mother leave home charged with what Moyers describes as a strain of Calvinism. It is composed of equal parts of missionary zeal to help others and fierce self-interest. It was best described, he says, in the admonition that Rebekah Baines Johnson, formidable matron of Johnson City, delivered frequently to her son Lyndon. "Do good," she said, "and you will do well." Onward Calvinist soldiers from Plains and Dixon and Grand Rapids...
