...pediatrician with a direct, matter-of-fact manner, Ruth and her lanky husband Mike had abandoned Spokane, Wash., six months before and settled in the exclusive Cincinnati suburb of Beckett Ridge. A pilot at Airborne, Mike had been commuting by plane to Wilmington for his seven-day work stints, but a terrifying incident had taken place at the Spokane military hospital where Ruth was working: a gunman rampaged through the place, killing five and wounding 23. "I was in Wilmington when it happened," says Mike, 39. "And I said, 'Enough.'" Beckett Ridge was safer, but to Ruth, 35, the place...

...Wind-up Bird Chronicle is a fairly easy read--little seems to have been lost in Jay Rubin's excellent translation. Each chapter, with such titles as "An Inquiry into the Nature of Pain" and "The Story of the Monkeys of the Shitty Island," has enough comedy and matter-of-fact prose to keep the narrative moving along quickly. When one of the climbers falls and hangs for his life by a rope, Annaud seems determined not to cash in on the moment's cliffhanger potential. There's no music to augment the tension, no exciting swooping pans--only matter-of-fact, straight-on shots of the climbers on both ends of the rope, accompanied by the sounds of scraping and strained breathing. Later, too, as the action proceeds through unavoidably beautiful terrain, Pitt and other characters are shown on uninspiring rocky stretches or in close-quartered caves, tents and villages...

...slow as regret, on the afternoon radio." Constancia wears Adolfo suits as she drives her pink Cadillac to the factory she owns; Reina sashays braless among the mahogany trees. Yet though they live on opposite sides of the revolution, both Aguero sisters share something deep as blood: a matter-of-fact commitment to the magic of their island of honey and rum. Constancia makes spells for women in the form of the "luscious unguents" she markets; Reina casts spells over...
