Herbert Edelman, no stranger to Simon's work--he appeared most recently as Walter Matthau's brother in the movie California Suite--handles Leo's comic scenes with expertise, though he tends to rush through his serious speeches. Only Jerry Orbach is completely and consistently excellent, especially in his physical gestures. At one point, he strokes his dead wife's picture as tenderly as if he were touching the woman herself--then jerks his hand away to hide the private gesture from his brother. Whether indulging in outrageous facial clowning, or making his voice crack with pain...
...Couple. The film adaptation of Neil Simon's funniest and most endearing play that isn't too funny and not very endearing. Matthau is a good Oscar--he can play these roles in his rumpled sleep, but Jack Lemmon "acts" too much, and his whine has none of Randall's or Carney's dingy charm...

The movie's biggest laughs occur when Walter Matthau, as a square married man, wakes up one morning to find a whore passed out in his bed. His wife (Elaine May) arrives, and what to do? The ensuing low farce is Simon's variation on James Thurber's The Unicorn in the Garden, and the team of Matthau and May roast an old burlesque chestnut to a perfect crisp...
