...rating. Underneath all that, however, is a simplistic whodunit (was it the loose cannon? The straight arrow? The butler?) without too many character nuances getting in the way. Scenes with the mother of the dead girl, intended to add a more human dimension to the murder, tend toward the maudlin and ill-advised. The central scene of the movie, which is destined for infamy (although it is actually less graphic than other sex scenes in the film), features a three-way between Morris, Collins, and Maureen in which Collins’s attraction to Morris becomes apparent and Maureen gains...
...more absurd collection of trivia and maudlin, boring gossip than the Charles and Diana story would be difficult to imagine. Why we Americans should continue to be so obsessed with the comings and goings of an effete and parasitic monarchy, which we shed our blood in 1776 to be rid of, will forever remain a mystery to me. The lyrics have yet to wound, but Oldham’s words do indeed characteristically reference bodily fluids and gory death. The extent of the two musicians’ collaboration is unclear, as the album itself is unmistakably close to Oldham’s past recordings , whose other alter-egos include Palace and Palace Music (with brother...
