That may happen as early as this week, or as late as next month. With Maverick Murdoch back on the streets, pressure is increased on the Times and the News to resume publishing. But those newspapers seem determined to strive for a long-term solution to the press-manning issue. Says a Times executive: "The achievement of our objective is of overriding importance." All well and good. But because of Murdoch's "me-tooism," the other papers find themselves in the odd position of negotiating for him over the roar of his presses and the jingle of his advertising...
There has been a vacancy on the Supreme Court and the Justices are distinctly disconcerted to learn that the President has appointed the first woman ever to become one of the august nine. One Justice, Dan Snow (Henry Fonda), is apoplectic. He is a cantankerous, mountain-climbing liberal maverick not too cunningly modeled on William O. Douglas. He is called "the great dissenter," a rather slippery attempt by Co-Playwrights Lawrence and Lee to shift a characterization that belongs uniquely and unalterably to Oliver Wendell Holmes. The new appointee, Ruth Loomis (Jane Alexander), is a rabid conservative hatched in Orange...
...tropical green bungalow in Clearwater, Fla., surrounded by prizes: brown vinyl reclining chairs, rattan porch furniture, a turquoise side-by-side refrigerator-freezer, a hairy purple stuffed dog, a pair of TV sets-stacked one atop the other-two imitation art nouveau lamps. An avocado-colored Ford Maverick Grabber parked in the driveway and the gold-patterned floor in the sun porch were won in contests. Piled in a hallway is some yet unpacked booty: a set of West Bend serving dishes, a Lionel racing set with a "hoop of fire," a CB radio and antenna...
...should be no surprise that Ry Cooder has come out with one of the year's best records. His easygoing but absolute guitar virtuosity, his witty, always respectful musical curiosity, has established him as a maverick who has set up shop somewhere along the border of pop and folk. No mainstreams for Cooder. He is forever taking off on side trips, turning down dusty country paths to retrieve some old bit of blues or roadhouse folk, sailing off to Hawaii and plucking some sweet melody straight out of the shade...
...driver, he grew up on the city's ethnic, working-class West Side (his father is Croatian, his mother Irish). At 23, he won a seat on the city council and six years later was elected clerk of courts, the city's second highest elective office. A maverick Democrat with a strong anti-Establishment bias, he has built his power base among poor and working-class voters. Says he: "They need someone to stand up and fight for them." Once he even invited Cleveland's civic leaders to breakfast with him at Tony's Diner, where...
