...first large gathering of the peace movement in West Germany since the military takeover in Poland, the Max Planck Institute's Alfred Mechtersheimer argued in Frankfurt two weeks ago that the Polish crisis has "enlarged the danger of war," but not so much because of what the Communists had done. The real problem was U.S. willingness to "take risks" in reacting to the crisis and "make every political crisis a potential point of departure for war in the erroneous belief that a nuclear war may be both conducted and limited...
...ball, is a hard-hitting, if not overwhelming runner. Pat McInally, from Harvard, of all places, is the league's best punter. And the offensive line is bolstered by two of the most awesome monsters currently stuffed into padding: Anthony Munoz (6 ft. 6 in., 280 Ibs.) and Max Montoya (6 ft. 5 in., a mere 275 Ibs.). She has already devoured Kempinski's lamb of a play...
Another highly effective White House aide, Chief Lobbyist Max Friedersdorf, resigned last week. Friedersdorf apparently quit for personal reasons; he had been hospitalized by an asthma attack last summer and took a less hectic job as U.S. consul general in Bermuda. He was replaced by Kenneth Duberstein, one of his chief assistants, who had proved adept at lining up votes for Reagan's programs in the Democratic-controlled House. Nonetheless, a lobbyist with Friedersdorf's skill in wooing legislators is bound to be missed...
