...there is reason to believe the critical plays have been made in the newspapers and on TV news shows largely beyond the realm of Lindsay's several thousand active volunteers. The door-to-door canvassing effort, for example, will probably reach a maxi-much of about 90,000 voters, well short of half its original objective. Community service projects, launched with considerable hooplah, have barely been heard of since. The voter registration drive was not very effective, and the black vote, heavily for Lindsay, will probably not be very heavy as a whole. Perhaps no conventional political campaign-with slogans...

...crucial issue, of course, was hemlines: Could the mini hold the short, short line against the downward tug of the midi and maxi forces? Would there be a repeat of 1947's New Look, plunging hems toward the ground-along with the hopes of girl watchers around the world? By week's end, who could tell? Some designers (Ungaro and Courreges) liked them short. Others (like Chanel, who calls the midi "awkward") prefer skirts that end at the bottom of the knee or at the ankle. Yves Saint Laurent is absolutely jenesais pas on the subject...

When the U.S. Navy launched its Mobile Riverine Force in South Viet Nam's canal-laced Mekong Delta, it soon became obvious that servicing the mini-flotilla was a maxi-headache. Riverine's little boats would slip into the maze of marshlands for long patrols, far from the medical and military aid of the mother ship anchored in one of the larger rivers. The most obvious means of supply was by helicopter, but most of the Delta is too wet and soft to support the weight of a chopper...

Also up in the air about taxes last week were Britain's legions of mini-skirted mods. British sales taxes include a 121% levy on purchases of adult clothing, but the regulations exempt children's wear. And the thigh-high miniskirts fall short of the maxi 24-in. waist-to-hem length that is bureaucratically considered the beginning of adult size. So up to now the mods have had to pay no taxes when they bought skirts. Aware that it is thus losing pounds and pounds of tax money, the government last week was searching...

...Carol cannot yet afford to buy her own jet, like Arnie Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, her golf winnings do allow her to indulge her penchant for thigh-high, pastel-colored skirts ("I wear miniskirts and maxi-legs"). And if worse comes to worst, she can always pick up a little change by challenging men to a driving contest. Probably the longest hitter on the ladies' tour, Carol consistently belts her drives 250 yds. or more, and there is little wrong with the rest of her game. Last month, in Atlanta's Lady Carling Open, she shot...
