Only one year ago, when designers began gingerly experimenting with hemlines lowered to midcalf (midi) or ankle (maxi). British Mod Designer Mary Quant, 34, who hiked up the first miniskirts, declared: "The miniskirt is here to stay." She says she still thinks so-although nearly half the 80 dresses she showed in London for next fall and winter were either midi or maxi. Quoth Quant: "It's not that the mini is out. It has such freedom of movement that I'll always use it. But why should I get hung up on one particular hemline...

Diamond Studs. American designers were not to be outdone at the Esquire-sponsored show. Bill Blass demonstrated his fondness for the military look with a heavy, maxi-length overcoat. For evening, John Weitz, a onetime race-car driver, showed a Levi-styled dinner jacket worn over a collarless shirt with a red bandanna knotted around the throat. When it goes into regular operation for British Rail between Dover and Boulogne, probably in August, it will carry more than 600 passengers-or 30 cars and 250 passengers. It will take only 30 or 35 minutes to cover the 30-mile cross-Channel route, and will reach speeds as high as 70 m.p.h. in calm seas...

Hemlines? Since the midcalf Maxi skirts began showing up in Paris earlier this spring, the question has been whether or not skirts would take a big plunge this fall. Rest easy, men: skirts are still flying high. "There's no controversy about skirt lengths as long as they're twelve inches above the knee," wags Gernreich. Actually, he will ship them five inches longer than that-which is a good idea, since a skirt much shorter is no skirt at all. And, to be on the safe side, Rudi recommends double skirts-a longer underskirt for ordinary streetwear...
