...prevails that a way has been found to admit women to Harvard College. Nothing of the kind has been done. Provisions have been made to enable young women to be instructed by Harvard professors: and if in time the number of such students becomes large enough, a second university may be built up at the side of Harvard which will give young women the same college advantages that young men have at present. The plan is a good one, and we hope that it will receive every encouragement. Higher education for women is what the society of this country most...
...request that the Spring Recess shall be postponed until after Lent is made early enough this year for the authorities to take action upon it. There is no conceivable reason for having it in Lent, except that it may include Fast Day; but the observance of Fast Day is completely obsolete, and interests none of us, whereas Lent is a very real thing in many families. All vacations are certainly intended for enjoyment as well as suspension of studies; therefore, to fix one at a season when a decreased amount of pleasure will be obtained by many others besides churchmen...
WHILE we are strongly opposed to the present system of scholarships, we have not the slightest objection to a system that shall dispense pecuniary assistance privately, and according to their needs, to deserving students; we fully realize that much good may be done by this kind of aid. This team will leave that country in April, and will arrive at San Francisco in May, and from that time until the last of June will play through the States and Canada. Its games with the New York and Philadelphia clubs promise to be very interesting. The team plays an American eleven in Philadelphia about the 15th of June. The next team to visit the States...
...truism to assert that any charitable mechanism, when it gets well to work, is sure to furnish results that were little anticipated. A system of eleemosynary scholarships, advertised as a conspicuous part of a college scheme, will form no exception to this proposition. A class of facts, easily obtained, may appear to testify to its unalloyed beneficence; but other facts, lying below the surface, and from their nature not susceptible of documentary proof, suggest that its advantages are accompanied with decided drawbacks...
