Support Your Local Sheriff earns most of its laughs by subverting western clichés; a mayor referring to his daughter says to Garner, "She takes after her dear departed mother." "Mother died?" Garner says with appropriate sobriety. "No, she just departed," says the mayor dryly, exiting screen left. The film abounds with set-up/tag-line jokes which work well, carrying it through a story line which parodies both Hawk's Rio Bravo and Ford's My Darling Clementine (Sheriff holds murderer despite efforts of murderer's family). ...that people are choosing to lead more and more insular existences rather than wanting to help people help themselves? When I read your article on Newark [March 21], I realized only too well what Mayor Addonizio meant by his statement, "America is not prepared to save its cities." He, as well as I, and many others, is aware that some of the nation's wealthiest white bedroom communities come very close to touching Newark-physically. ...Martin Luther King said: "I don't think that anything can be more tragic in the civil rights movement than the attitude that the black man can solve his problems by himself." Indeed, Cleveland's Mayor Carl Stokes and Gary's Mayor Richard Hatcher could not have been elected without considerable white support. White cooperation is vital at every level of development, if only because no amount of incantation can change the basic ratio of blacks to whites in the U.S. population...
...scene: the annual production of (topical) satire by the Inner Circle, New York City's political writers. The scene stealer: New York's Mayor John Lindsay, candidate for reelection, singing a ditty he composed to the tune of Where Have All the Flowers Gone...
...Exorbitant rent increases have alienated and driven out middle-class whites - although the may or recently forced a substantial cutback by threatening landlords with rent control. An explosive experiment in school decentralization has left an ugly rift in the Negro-Jewish ethnic alliance that brought Lindsay into office. The mayor's weakest point has been labor relations: teachers, transit employees, welfare workers, firemen, police and garbagemen have all struck the city or called slowdowns during his term...
