Evers is particularly inscrutable. One of the first blacks elected mayor of a Mississippi town since the Reconstruction, and a strong candidate for governor in 1971, Evers has an outside chance of rattling Mississippi politics to the bone by becoming the first black to be elected to a powerful position in the state. Unfortunately, the price he has been forced to pay is high. Evers, in an attempt to attract whites, has apparently decided to take a more conservative line than any other candidate.
