...interest in male flesh was unusual for those sexually timorous times. Back then, seeing actors like Barry Fitzgerald and Hume Cronyn in sleeveless undershirts carried the jolt of nudity, as did the sight of bulky wrestler types (Ted de Corsia in The Naked City, Stanislaus Zbyszko and Mike Mazurki in Night and the City), or Brute Force's lusciously muscled John Hoyt with no shirt at all. Dassin's appreciation of topless torsos give a special piquancy to the last line of Hellinger's narration in his docu-drama: "There are eight million stories in the naked city. This...

...with lesbian leanings toward Teacher Sue Lyon. Anne Bancroft (in a role vacated by Patricia Neal when she suffered a stroke) plays a tough mission doctor who drinks, smokes, tells truths that hurt, and ultimately saves everyone else by giving herself in concubinage to the lustful Khan (Mike Mazurki). Flora Robson, Anna Lee and Mildred Dunnock view her sacrifice with tolerance, lining up against Margaret to plug the thesis that in moments of stress a hard-headed broad may be more blessed than a God-fearing prude. But, all in all, Davy makes his giant-sized legend come as truly alive as that of Mike Fink, the river boatman, or Paul Bunyan...

...toplofty schemes, Widmark sets out to get control of London wrestling. He crosses up several minor characters and every major one, including his girl (Gene Tierney). Then he crosses himself up. Duped by Widmark, his partner (Wrestler Stanislaus Zbyszko) dies after an agonizingly filmed grudge fight with Wrestler Mike Mazurki. The dead man's avenging son sets the whale city's underworld on Widmark's heels in an overlong, anticlimactic chase...

...handles Chandler's extremely cinemadaptable story so well that, if anything, it improves it in the retelling. It is the story of an indigent Los Angeles private detective (Dick Powell) who, for the sake of a few spare dollars, helps a gigantic imbecile named Moose Malloy (Mike Mazurki) to hunt down the girl he loved when he went to jail. In the course of the quest the detective interviews a wonderful, boozy old floozy (Esther Howard) who could bring Hogarth up to date. Before long he finds himself suspected of murder and hired by several conflicting sides...
